Pasadena Small Lot Subdivision
Located in a single-family neighborhood in Pasadena, California, the project pursues higher density while ensuring privacy for each unit through the inclusion of internal courtyards and atriums. By adapting the A-frame typology, the design echoes the distinctive rooflines prevalent in Pasadena’s residential architecture, reinterpreting them to accommodate contemporary living needs and increased density.
A key feature of the proposal is its commitment to fostering neighborhood connections. The communal courtyard at the heart of the development is envisioned as a flexible gathering space, designed to support a range of activities—from casual conversations and shared gardening to organized community events. Pervious paving allows for lush landscaping inviting residents and neighbors to come together, nurturing interaction and a sense of belonging while each unit retains its own intimate domain. In this way, the project not only addresses challenges of density and privacy but also enriches the social fabric of the neighborhood. Nefer Fernandez, as reform collective’s Studio Director, was part of the architecture team that executed the design.
